Our precious metals

A treasure of nature...

Fine gold or 24-carat gold is the purest form of gold, what is obtained when it is mined. It is 99.9% pure. Fine gold is rust-free, yet highly malleable. To be worked and made more resistant, it must be combined with other metals in varying proportions, depending on the desired characteristics such as color, malleability, toughness and durability. Depending on the amount of fine gold added to the metal alloy, different titrations are obtained: 9 carats (37.5% pure gold), 14 carats (58.5% pure gold), 18 carats (75% pure gold)... In France, jewellery houses only work with 18 carat gold. As 9-carat gold does not contain a high enough percentage of fine gold, it becomes just as fragile as 24-carat gold. It is less resistant to shocks and can be deformed... 18-carat gold is an alloy of 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals, such as silver, copper and palladium. It is officially called 750 thousandths gold, because it is 75% pure, i.e. it contains 75% fine gold. Depending on the proportion of other metals, different colors are obtained.

18-CARAT YELLOW GOLD - 750 THOUSANDTHS

To preserve its original yellow color and resistance properties, 18-carat yellow gold is made up of 75% fine gold and an equal dose of copper and silver (12.5% each). Yellow gold is the most traditional metal color. Its warm, luminous color suits all skin tones. In addition to being a particularly resistant precious metal, it will not lose its color over time. 18-carat yellow gold is a timeless color that will particularly enhance stones, whether colored stones or diamonds.

18-CARAT WHITE GOLD - 750 THOUSANDTHS

18-carat white gold is an alloy of several metals, composed of 75% pure gold, 18.5% silver to obtain the white color, 3.5% copper and 3% palladium. White gold has a grayish color by nature, and is coated with a thin layer of rhodium to give it a brilliant white. White gold is the most popular metal for jewelry, as it is both resistant and suitable for all gemstone colors, particularly diamonds. Contrary to popular belief, 750 thousandths white gold is more resistant than 950 thousandths platinum. The main disadvantage of white gold is that it tends to take on a slight yellow tinge over time. This is because the rhodium layer fades over time. 18-carat white gold needs to be cared for to prevent yellowing. For this, rhodium plating is necessary to restore the jewel's whiteness and brilliance. Rhodium plating is a service offered for life by Salmon.

18-CARAT PINK GOLD - 750 THOUSANDTHS

18-carat rose gold is an alloy of several metals, composed of 75% pure gold, 20% copper and 5% silver. It is the copper that gives it its pinkish color. 18-carat rose gold is less common than 18-carat white and yellow gold. Its luminous, rosy color goes well with all stone colors and contrasts beautifully with diamonds. As well as being a hard-wearing metal, 18-carat rose gold will never lose its color. 18-carat rose gold is the ideal in-between for white and yellow gold, its color being soft on the skin and less sharp than the others. Its discreet pink hue is suitable for both men and women.

950 THOUSANDTHS PLATINUM

Platinum is a metal used in its almost pure state, composed of 95% platinum and 5% copper. Platinum has a silvery color. Platinum's unalterable color adds sparkle to the stones in the frame. It has the advantage of being rustproof, anti-allergic and inherently white. It therefore needs no rhodium plating like 18-carat white gold. On the other hand, it is also the most malleable precious metal. It is more sensitive to wear and deformation. If you're hesitating between 18-carat white gold and platinum, we recommend 18-carat white gold. Although platinum has the advantage of a color that doesn't move, it tends to take scratches and micro-impacts more easily than gold. These impacts will always remain slightly visible after cleaning and polishing, which is less the case with white gold.

SILVER 925 THOUSANDTHS

925 silver, also known as sterling silver, is made up of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, such as copper, to reinforce it. Silver has a silver color, as its name suggests. The main advantage of silver is its much lower price than gold. Although the color strongly resembles that of 18-carat white gold and 950 platinum, silver is a very different metal. Indeed, it does not age in the same way, as it will tend to darken over time due to oxidation and scratch more easily in everyday use. 925 silver is widely used for costume jewelry. For bridal jewelry, 18-carat gold is generally preferred, as it has a much longer life and greater luster.
